坎特伯里大主教繼承了聖奧古斯丁(坎特伯里)的使徒統系，成為全英之主教長(The Primate of All England)。而約克大主教，是英倫的主教長(The Primate of England)，坎特伯里大主教的權威，不但是承受了他的歷史事實，更是在神聖大公教會中的聖禮事保持者。
