让-亨利·法布爾（Jean-Henri Fabre，1823年12月22日—1915年10月11日），法國著名博物學家、科學家、昆蟲學家、科普作家，以《昆蟲學回憶錄》（Souvenirs Entomologiques，或譯《昆蟲記》）一書留名後世，在法國自然科學史與文學史上都有其重要地位，這部巨著所表述的是昆蟲為生存而鬥爭時表現出的妙不可言、驚人的靈性。現今這部名著已被譯成十三種不同的文字，原文共分為兩大冊，共十章。由於法布爾一生著述豐富，並著有《昆蟲記》，聞名世界，因此曾被法國著名作家雨果稱之為「昆蟲世界的荷馬」。
身為現代昆蟲學與動物行為學的先驅，他以膜翅目、鞘翅目、直翅目的研究而聞名。除了昆蟲，也熱衷研究蕈類，他以水彩繪畫的700多幅真菌圖，深受普羅旺斯詩人米斯特拉爾（Frédéric Mistral）的讚賞。他也為漂染業作出貢獻，曾獲得三項有關茜素（alizarine）的專利權。
法布爾生於法國南部一個叫聖萊昂的小鎮，從小熱愛大自然。由於他的父母都是農民，因此家境清貧，他的學習語程非常刻苦，後靠自學先後取得教師文憑及數學、物理等學科的學士學位，是個熱情、生動的老師，亦因為他在中學讀書時拉丁文和希臘文都學得很好，為他日後的寫作打下了很好的基礎。他一生淡泊，大部分時間都是在鄉間度過，著述豐富，與同時代的科學家都很友善，這其中包括英國經濟學家穆勒（John Stuart Mill）。雖然法布爾並不支持演化論，但達爾文對他尊敬有加，稱他為「無可追摹的觀察者」（inimitable observer）。科學研究以外，也愛作些小調，並以普羅旺斯語做詩，留下了詩集一部（Oubreto Provençalo）。
在法布爾晚年時，法國文學界多次向諾貝爾文學獎評委推薦他獲諾貝爾文學獎，但都失敗了。各界的人士對於推薦的結果均很不滿意，更多方發表文章、寫信為他抱不平。但對於這件事，法布爾的回答是：「我工作，是因為其中有樂趣，而不是為了追求榮譽。你們因為我被公眾遺忘而憤憤不平，其實，我並不很在乎。」
法布爾具有很高的文學造詣，而他深受文藝復興時代的作家，尤其是拉伯雷的影響。

法布爾生於法國南部阿韦龙省萊弗祖（Lévezou）的小鎮聖萊昂（Saint-Léons），為家中長子，童年在聖萊昂附近勒馬拉瓦爾（Le Malaval）的祖父母家度過。7歲時回到聖萊昂上小學。10歲那年，舉家隨父親到羅代（Rodez）經營咖啡廳，但生意不好，四年後再搬到圖盧茲。
因家庭收入拮据，被迫輟學，當過鐵路工人、檸檬小販。雖身陷困境，法布爾並沒有放棄追求知識，仍然堅持繼續自學。在他19歲那年，他考進了亞维農師範學校，獲得了獎學金，並獲得教師文憑，之後開始正式展開他漫長的教學生涯。在教學、著書之餘，他仍然繼續自學，先後獲數學、物理等學科的學士學位，並指：「學習這件事不在乎有沒有人教你，最重要的是在於你自己，有沒有悟性和恆心。」1855年，法布爾更加獲得了巴黎科學院的博士學位。漸漸在科學界贏得名聲，1865年巴斯德專誠到阿維農探訪法布爾。
1866年，當上阿維農勒坎博物館（Musée Requien d'Avignon）的館長，穆勒兩次造訪，兩人成為好友。翌年到巴黎謁見拿破侖三世，獲頒騎士勳章。1870年，法布爾先進的教學方法，惹來了保守宗教人的批評（例如指摘他在夜校課程中向婦女講解花的受粉過程），被迫辭去教職，搬到奧朗日（Orange），埋首撰寫教科書。
1877年，跟他一般熱愛大自然的兒子朱爾（Jules）以十六歲之齡過世。兩年後，搬到塞里尼昂（Sérignan），在那裡買下一所房子與一塊毗連的荒地，將園子命名為荒石園（L'Harmas），在那裡專心觀察、實驗、著述，同年《昆蟲記》首卷面世，對自然科學與文學深具影響力，從此被喻為「昆蟲詩人」。晚年各種榮譽不斷降臨在法布爾身上，除了科學獎項，還有人發起運動讓他提名諾貝爾文學獎。以92歲的高齡，在荒石園辭世。他在荒石園臨死前看到了外面陽光下飛舞的小蟲子，還依依戀戀地說：「希望投胎轉世之後，我仍能繼續研究你們……」[1]

日本很早已譯介法布爾，魯迅、周作人等人從日譯本認識了法布爾，因而法布爾的名字也很早傳到中國。鲁迅在晚年有意轉譯《昆蟲記》，但不果。他藏书中现存的《昆虫记》日译本就有三种[2]。
中國自1920年代起不斷有《昆蟲記》的節譯本、轉譯本面世，但到了2001年首套從原文翻譯的足本《昆蟲記》，才由廣州花城出版社出版，並於2003年推出修訂版（繁體字版於2002年由台灣遠流出版社發行，對專有名詞作了校定）。
